What's it Look Like?

• General syntax looks like C, including:
  • Assignment, increment/decrement and bit shift operators
  • if, for and do/while constructs.
• Variables names are:
  • Sometimes similar to Bourne shell variables (eg, $$ is the process id)
  • Case sensitive
  • Restricted to [a-zA-Z0-9_], beginning w/ alpha character
  • Allowed to be pretty long
• Function names follow same rules of variables
• Uses some functionality found in awk
• Regex syntax similar to sed
